Support for Growth in Applied Economics in Scotland

Due to the challenges caused by Coronavirus, regrettably we are unable to run the Economic Futures Placement Programme in summer 2020.

Economic Futures aims to engage with undergraduate economics students, graduates and early career academics, across Scotland to provide an eco-system for applied economic analysis. The project will offer a series of programmes including work placement opportunities in academia, public policy, charities and the private sector.

In June 2019, Economic Futures offered its first phase of work placements.

We had 75 applications, all of a very high calibre, for 8 posts at the following institutions: University of Stirling, Scottish Fiscal Commission, Scottish Funding Council and the Fraser of Allander Institute.

In the 2020 we have expanded our initiative and are delighted to have the following organisations involved:

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for an Economic Futures work placement, applicants must be:

  • Enrolled at a Scottish University;
  • Completing 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate degree;
  • Studying Economics or a related subject;
  • Eligible to work in the UK.

Candidates may apply for more than one placement.

Students that have undertaken a work placement with Economic Futures previously, are not eligible to apply.


Project locations: Glasgow, Stirling, Edinburgh, Dundee, Midlothian.
Payment: £15.25 per hour
Closing Date: 30 March 2020
Interviews: Week commencing 20 April
Start date: from June 2020 (negotiable with project lead)

  • write a personal statement detailing why you want to pursue a career in Economics or applied analysis
